On The Shelf Preview: The Magicians

I've just begun Lev Grossman's The Magicians, a story of fantasy and escapism in the Potter/Narnia vein told for an "adult" audience. I'm told it's quite good, and given both my childhood affection for Narnia and my more-recent affection for Potter it seemed like a fun read.

I'll have a review of it up in a week or so. Consider this a heads-up so that you can read it before I post my thoughts if you so choose.

Hope everyone had a great weekend.

  1. Excited to hear your thoughts! The last couple of times I've been at the bookstore I've almost picked this up, but never managed to actually do so.

And off topic, but where did you find the quotation that's right beneath the Verbosity heading? I like it.

  2. This one's been intriguing me for a while. It's in paperback now, so I took the plunge.

The quote's from Dietrich Bonhoeffer's "Letters and Papers from Prison." He was a fascinating man: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dietrich_Bonhoeffer

  4. I hope you enjoy it! Bonhhoeffer was a hero among animals. More people should know his name and celebrate his humanism. His ideas on Christianity are complicated, and I can't say that I agree with everything he writes/says, but I believe he lived and died by righteous convictions, and he gave himself for something far, far greater than his own life.
